Piggbank App

Dr Kathryn Summers at the University of Baltimore specializes in researching how to support low literacy people and other disadvantaged groups through design. She gave us the challenge of designing a banking app to assist those recently released from prison get back on their feet.

Research Process

A Complex Population:

As a diverse group with prevalent literacy, psychological, neurobiological, and socioeconomic challenges, we needed to do a significant amount of background research to build an app for this population. To do so, we relied on abundant academic information to generate four reports on their digital & financial literacy, social challenges, cognitive disabilities, and physical limitations. Using good principles of design to support them, we determined focuses of the app should be in the four areas: simple language, positive language, goal setting support, and resource provision. The research also developed the personas I wrote below that were heavily used in ideation.

Feedback

Quotes showing what reviewers thought of our app building: Good audience, usability, and usefulness

We got very positive feedback from our professor and our peers (some of which is shown here). Overall, our professor was impressed with the depth of our research and the level of detail and emotion put into our personas. The design received an A.
